There Is Only One Latasha Harlins - Homeisode 60

This Homeisode discusses the killing of 15-year-old Latasha Harlins and its reflection in the film Menace II Society.

On March 16, 1991, Latasha Harlins, an African American girl, was fatally shot in the back of the head by store owner Soon Ja Du at Empire Liquor Market after being wrongfully accused of shoplifting. Harlins was holding $2 for orange juice. Du received no jail time, fueling deep racial tension between the Korean American business community and Black residents of South Central L.A. This injustice was a major catalyst for the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

The 1993 film Menace II Society captures this atmosphere of mistrust. In a pivotal scene, the character O-Dog is aggressively confronted by a Korean store owner demanding, "Hurry up and buy, motherf*****!"

This dialogue mirrors the real-life hostility. While the fictional scene ends in hyper-violent double murder and robbery, unlike Harlins' quiet tragedy, it powerfully reflects the pervasive feeling of being profiled and devalued.

Latasha Harlins remains a symbol of systemic injustice. Her death and Du’s lenient sentencing proved to many that the justice system failed Black youth. Menace II Society used the "Hurry up and buy" dynamic to immortalize the explosive racial tension of the early 90s, validating community grievance and transforming the Harlins case into a cultural touchstone that helped prime the city for the riots.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.720
What's up, people? It's your boy Quincy Murdaugh

00:00:02.720 --> 00:00:05.320
with another episode of Not Just Music Podcast,

00:00:05.940 --> 00:00:13.599
where we keep it real and honest. Today I want

00:00:13.599 --> 00:00:19.899
to talk about Latasha Harlins. This was a key,

00:00:19.899 --> 00:00:23.640
key figure. A lot of times we hear about a lot

00:00:23.640 --> 00:00:26.940
of police brutality, a lot of police shootings.

00:00:27.469 --> 00:00:32.090
a lot of racial injustice, a lot of things centered

00:00:32.090 --> 00:00:35.289
around the Rodney King beating that took place

00:00:35.289 --> 00:00:38.789
in Los Angeles. There was a lot of stuff going

00:00:38.789 --> 00:00:43.590
on and during that time it was a lot of outsiders,

00:00:44.810 --> 00:00:49.450
foreigners that had businesses and stores in

00:00:49.450 --> 00:00:51.829
Los Angeles area in these black communities.

00:00:52.149 --> 00:00:54.310
I don't know if a lot of people are familiar

00:00:54.310 --> 00:00:57.640
with menace and society where Old dog goes in

00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:01.200
the store and it's a Korean lady or whatnot and

00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:04.219
a man in there is like hurry up and buy This

00:01:04.219 --> 00:01:07.120
was real life. It was a lot of Koreans taking

00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:10.400
over the stores around this time where a lot

00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:16.439
of black Issues were going on where black individuals

00:01:16.439 --> 00:01:19.340
were being mistreated Unfortunately, and one

00:01:19.340 --> 00:01:21.239
person I want to read about is a key figure.

00:01:21.379 --> 00:01:24.819
Her name is Latasha Harlins Latasha Harlins was

00:01:24.819 --> 00:01:27.540
a 15 -year -old African -American girl who was

00:01:27.540 --> 00:01:31.480
shot and killed over a $1 .79 bottle of orange

00:01:31.480 --> 00:01:33.579
juice in the liquor store in South Central Los

00:01:33.579 --> 00:01:38.379
Angeles on March 16, 1991. The incident involved

00:01:38.379 --> 00:01:41.700
a confrontation with the store owner, Soon Ja

00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:45.239
-do, a Korean woman who shot Harlins in the back

00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:48.000
of the head and the act was captured on security

00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:51.920
video, which is on YouTube if y 'all want to

00:01:51.920 --> 00:01:55.480
see that. This event occurred shortly after the

00:01:55.480 --> 00:01:59.079
beating of Rodney King by police intensifying

00:01:59.079 --> 00:02:01.920
Existing racial tensions between african -americans

00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:04.959
and korean -americans in the area during the

00:02:04.959 --> 00:02:07.959
trial Harlins family faced dismissal remarks

00:02:07.959 --> 00:02:12.620
from the Presiding judge who suggested that the

00:02:12.620 --> 00:02:15.840
tragedy could have been avoided if Harlins had

00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:19.139
not entered the store Can you imagine it? So

00:02:19.139 --> 00:02:23.469
basically she Long if you didn't enter the store

00:02:23.469 --> 00:02:26.389
like so we didn't have those rights as every

00:02:26.389 --> 00:02:29.270
other individuals what this judge was saying

00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:33.590
She wasn't so she wouldn't got killed If she

00:02:33.590 --> 00:02:35.530
just wanted to went into the store, which was

00:02:35.530 --> 00:02:40.389
her Freedom of speech her free free right in

00:02:40.389 --> 00:02:43.430
this world. We call America and the judge said

00:02:43.430 --> 00:02:46.919
this What's going on? It's your boy Duann Barrino

00:03:47.770 --> 00:03:50.330
was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but received

00:03:50.330 --> 00:03:53.539
probation. a verdict that sparked outrage within

00:03:53.539 --> 00:03:57.659
the African -American community and led to increased

00:03:57.659 --> 00:04:00.939
hostility towards Korean -owned businesses. This

00:04:00.939 --> 00:04:04.580
incident, along with the Rodney King case, contributed

00:04:04.580 --> 00:04:09.039
to the civil unrest and riots that erupted in

00:04:09.039 --> 00:04:14.120
Los Angeles in 1992, highlighted deep seated

00:04:14.120 --> 00:04:16.779
issues of racial conflict and injustice in urban

00:04:16.779 --> 00:04:20.250
communities. The murder of Latasha Harlins remains

00:04:20.250 --> 00:04:24.769
a significant event in discussions about race

00:04:24.769 --> 00:04:28.410
relations, systematic inequality and violence

00:04:28.410 --> 00:04:36.009
in America. Yeah, so deep, deep story. Deep,

00:04:36.069 --> 00:04:39.970
deep story of Latasha. There's many more stories

00:04:39.970 --> 00:04:45.870
that were similar to this, but this shows the

00:04:45.870 --> 00:04:49.740
injustice of what blacks have to go through.

00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:53.180
Back then, we still go through to this day, so

00:04:53.180 --> 00:04:55.339
I wanted to bring awareness to that. Los Angeles

00:04:55.339 --> 00:04:58.660
was hot back then, you know, a lot of tensions,

00:04:58.800 --> 00:05:01.800
a lot of racial tensions and things like that.

00:05:02.180 --> 00:05:05.160
Latasha Harlan, she also has a movie about her.

00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:07.540
This is how I found out about her. I actually

00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:10.800
watched a movie, touching movie, called Latasha

00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:14.019
Harlan's. It's on Tubi. People actually wanted

00:05:14.019 --> 00:05:18.160
to see this biopic of her. It's a very, very

00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:20.839
well put movie, well put together movie, great

00:05:20.839 --> 00:05:26.439
actor. So it's good to see that her story, unfortunately

00:05:26.439 --> 00:05:30.560
how it ended is sad, but how it was put into

00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:33.379
something that was celebrated and rewarded. And

00:05:33.379 --> 00:05:37.720
we celebrated Latasha and all the many victims

00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:43.639
we've lost to violence. All the black, innocent

00:05:43.639 --> 00:05:47.399
individuals that we've lost. Bringing light to

00:05:47.399 --> 00:05:50.800
this. So if you want to check her biopic out

00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:58.339
song to be Latasha Harlings the movie like I

00:05:58.339 --> 00:06:02.300
said, it deals with a lot of Black issues and

00:06:02.300 --> 00:06:04.779
trauma like I think she had lost her mother at

00:06:04.779 --> 00:06:09.100
a young age lost her mother And her father wasn't

00:06:09.100 --> 00:06:11.720
in the house house and she dealt with a lot of

00:06:11.720 --> 00:06:15.740
anger issues mental issues as a lot of black

00:06:15.740 --> 00:06:18.839
African Americans deal with in the situations

00:06:18.839 --> 00:06:21.399
were brought up in, you know, it also brings

00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:25.279
tension to mental health mental awareness psychologically,

00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:29.660
so It's a it's a story that needs to be told.

00:06:29.660 --> 00:06:32.540
It's a story that needs to be heard and I'm glad

00:06:32.540 --> 00:06:38.959
they gave Latasha Harlins a platform Hi, so once

00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:40.939
again, it's boy Quincy Murdoch with another episode

00:06:40.939 --> 00:06:42.839
and I just music podcast where we keep it really

00:06:42.839 --> 00:06:43.279
honest
